Good evening, Grandview HS parents and students, 

Today was our first day of alternative instructional measures.  We had the remaining students who did not receive their printed packets pick them up this morning.  I wanted to answer a few questions and update you on upcoming services we are providing for your students.

Frequently Asked Questions
1.  Why is my student's packet so large?  Those students who asked for printed packets are getting not only receiving the assignments but all of the resources as well.  These resources include powerpoints, reading sections, book sections and other supports to better help your student be successful on the work they have been given.  These packets are also three weeks worth of work for your student.  Please help them plan daily to follow the weekly planner and stay on track for the time we are out of school.

2.  Does this work count for a grade?  Yes.  Since we are high school, your student's grades are attached to their credits.  In order for them to continue to earn HS credit, we have to continue to provide instruction.  We are waiting to see what evidence DESE will require to prove that we have educated your student and they have earned this semester's credits.  This instruction is especially important to our seniors who must complete credits to graduate this year.  This is different from your elementary grades.  Most of these classes are providing enrichment activities for this time out.

3.  Will they have a test on day 1 back?  No, not on the first day. Our hopeful return is April 6th.  Some classes are having students take small assessments along the way to check learning.  When we return, teachers will be doing a short review and then giving the test if they did not give them while on the break.  For our dual-enrolled/college students, Jefferson College and MoBap have informed us that they are doing business as usual.  Once their spring break is over, their courses will resume online. Test in these classes will be online and likely completed at home.  ATS students will also be required to do something similar.  Students, keep on eye on your school email for communication from your college or professors on how they plan to assess you in these JeffCo and ATS courses.    

4.  I see that there are due dates.  Are they flexible?  We would like students to follow due dates.  We realize that it may be difficult get any paper copies of work in on the due dates.  Teachers will be somewhat flexible.  For those needing to turn in hard copies of work, we have several options.  Students can take a picture of their work and email to their teacher, they can drop off at school on Fridays or Tuesday from 8-2PM in dropbox that will be located outside the office side door, or they can send work through the nearest bus food drop-off.  Grandview afternoon modified bus food routes are already in place.

5.  What are some strategies to help my student complete their work?  Encourage them to treat each day still like a school day.  They should get up and spend 2-3 hours working on school work each day.  If they complete the work assigned for the day, they will stay on track for when we return to school.  If your student struggles with sitting for long periods of time, have them work for about 40 minutes then take a break for about 20 minutes.  Do this two to three times until their work is complete for the day.

6.  Are we still taking state tests and/or the ACT?  We are not taking the ACT.  We have cancelled our March 24th testing date.  We have contacted ACT.  It looks like our next available opportunity to take the ACT will be in the fall.  We will be testing our current Juniors in the first testing window in the fall.  In regards to state testing, our last communication from DESE is that we will still be required to test if schools reopen before the window closes on May 22nd.  This is the other reason we must keep working with our students academically.  As soon as DESE notifies us of a change, we will let you know.  

7.  What about Junior/Senior Prom and Graduation for our seniors?  Our goal is to have both if possible. Prom is scheduled in April in St Louis.  Due to the extended ban on groups in St. Louis City and County, we are aware that our venue will no longer work.  We are in the process of getting our deposit back so that we can have funds to have prom potentially somewhere else.  Graduation...Absolutely, we will have graduation for our seniors. They have all worked so hard and we want to recognize them.  We are not sure if it will be on May 18th.  We will abide by the directives given by the JC Health Department and state authorities.  Graduation may occur in the summer but we are continuing to plan for it.  

We spoke to our students about social distancing.  Although our students are the least at risk of coming down with a severe case of COVID19, they are the most at risk of being a carrier.  As I shared with them, limit your exposure to others to protect those in your family that are at higher risk such as grandparents, parents, family with compromised health, etc.  We shared that they should keep distances of 6 feet between themselves and others, regularly wash their hands, use antibacterial gel or spray, and not to rub their nose, eyes or face.  

Food Service Update:  Grandview is offering to provide breakfast and lunch to our students that count on food at school.  If you need food, it will be delivered by bus on modified routes.  Go to grandviewr2.com.  On the front page, you will find a google form to fill out to request food.  This offer is available to our HS students bused in from Lonedell and Richwoods.  For Richwoods, we will be delivering food to their school at 3pm.  They will be running bus routes to deliver the food to students.  Lonedell is working on transportation.  They are planning on participating in the food program as well.  We will notify you when Lonedell food delivery is in place.  

We will have someone in the office to answer phone calls Tuesday through Friday.  All buildings and campus are closed except to essential personnel.  Please do not hesitate to contact us.
